Cantonese Opera is a much respected and highly entertaining art form dating back to the 13th century. It combines music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics and acting. Cantonese Opera in the 21st century is just as energetic, and includes fantastic attention to detail with bright, beautiful costumes and magnificent make- up. This workshop gives you a great introduction to this art form and is both highly entertaining and educational! You’ll learn a lot and get involved too!...
The workshop starts with Cantonese opera film appreciation, and then gives you a great introduction to the performing characters and what they represent. There will be demonstrations of performing elements, so that you can really experience the skills involved. You will get a chance to learn some movements as well as the secrets of face paintings with make-up on masks! Finally, you’ll watch a live show in Hong Kong Cultural Museum in Shatin! No one goes home empty handed: as a souvenir, you'll receive an exquisite course handout and a painted mask!
This exclusive workshop will be brought to you by Paris Wong, one of the youngest Cantonese opera singers and a graduate from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. Paris has been the host of the "Cantonese Opera Appreciation Class" which organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board since 2007. The workshop will be hosted at the Tong Saam Lau studio on Hollywood Road on Sundays.
